![]() ![]() Things aren't looking too good until you're saved at the last second and gameplay moves out to the beachhead. ![]() The first level we were shown showed was a bit on the grisly side: perhaps taking a cue from the opening of CoD4: Modern Warfare, you find yourself captured, watching one of your mates being tortured by a Japanese soldier. ![]() ![]() As he told the press in attendance, "We're out to make the best shooter this year." But Mark Lamia, studio head of Treyarch, eagerly points out that, unlike with CoD3, this team has had a full two years to build the game ( CoD3 was created in one). You can certainly say Treyarch has its work cut out for it: every CoD game developed by franchise creator Infinity Ward (that's 1, 2 and 4) has ended up on various "Game of the Year" lists, while console-only releases like Finest Hour, Big Red One, and the most recent, Call of Duty 3, have received less glowing response. We recently paid a visit to Treyarch's Santa Monica studios, where we were given our first look at the game in action (and unsuccessfully searched for hints of Spider-Man: World of Webcraft). In development at Treyarch, the fifth full installment in the CoD series will return to World War II and for the first time explore the Pacific conflict. "Every game should sound like it has 'World' or 'War' in the title!" Exhibit A: the new Guitar Hero: On Tour, the upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour, and now Call of Duty: World at War. With Activision's acquisition of Vivendi Games and Blizzard Entertainment last year, it's fun to imagine what its marketing meetings are like these days. ![]()
